There is a very simple fact in the industry; Oracle is not the same company it was a year ago. With the addition of cloud and the needs for autonomous services, Oracle has been making major enhancements to both the core technologies like Oracle Database and the sales process. Many of the changes are still moving through the pipeline and are not very evident yet, but they are coming, and they have been good changes.
From a technology perspective, many of these changes are already evident, with services like the BareMetal cloud services, that give Enterprise and Government customers more control and isolation of their services than what is possible with other cloud providers. This solved a critical gap for these customers.
You can also see this with the ability to provide cloud services that are truly scaled up and scale down with no service interruption, which with the Oracle Cloud allows selected services to hot-scale, while other clouds require downtime to change. This is seen with the three Autonomous Database services, which enable automation for hot scaling, security, and automation many of the DBA tasks.
While Oracle has been leading in these areas, there has always been a challenge with consuming the services for longer trials. This is a critical feature that is required by developers and architects, that need to test technologies like the Autonomous Database for extended periods before the application goes live.
Today at #OOW19, Oracle announced a new free tier of Oracle Cloud services, enabling developers and administrators free access to many of the Oracle Cloud IaaS and Autonomous Databases.
What do you get for free?
It starts with 2 free Autonomous DB instances per OCI tenancy.
But this is not just for free database services, You also get two VMs for free! Each with 1GB of RAM.
Free services also include storage with 100GB block storage, 10GB object storage and 10GB archive storage. Networking is also included, with a free Load Balancer and 10TB of outbound traffic per month. This is a lot of free cloud; enabling developers to write applications, architects to trial the technologies and also a great way for people to start learning how OCI works.
Ready to jump into a free cloud? Mythics is now offering a webinar where you can learn how to subscribe to the free services, and deploy a free Autonomous database combined with a free compute node. Register here: Oracle Cloud Free Tier Webinar
